Provided are a projection-type display device, a control method for the projection-type display device, and a control program for the projection-type display device, whereby a light-emission surface for image light can be appropriately cleaned and display quality can be maintained. A HUD 100 comprises: a projection display unit 49 that spatially modulates light emitted from a light source, on the basis of image information, projects the spatially modulated image light on to a windshield 2, and displays an image; a case 3 housing the projection display unit and having an opening K through which image light is emitted; an object removal mechanism 11 that rubs the surface of a cover 9 blocking the opening and removes an object adhered to the surface of the cover; a region detection unit 47A that detects an object-adherence region in which an object is adhered on the cover; and an object removal control unit 47C that operates the object removal mechanism if important display content is included in a section of the image light obstructed by the object-adherence region.
