Abstract:
 A projection type display device that inhibits costs, has a compact structure, reduces the distance between the housing and screen, and exhibits excellent projection performance. A projection type display device (20) is provided with: an image display element (3) that displays an image on a conjugate plane on the reduction side; and a projection optical system (10) that magnifies and projects the image as a conjugate image on a screen that is a conjugate plane on the magnification side. A reflection optical system (2) has negative power and has the same optical axis (Z) as a refraction optical system (1). The center of the display surface of the image display element 3) is arranged so as to be eccentric from the optical axis (Z), and when the magnification-side conjugate position of the center of the display surface is disposed vertically upwards from the optical axis (Z), the point of intersection (13) between the lower beam of a light beam (11) that forms an image on the lower end center of the conjugate image and the upper beam of a light beam (12) that forms an image on the upper end center of the conjugate image is positioned more towards the reduction side than the apex of the lens surface of the refraction optical system (1) closest to the reflection optical system (2). The projection type display device satisfies a predetermined expression.
