Abstract:
This projection-type display device is provided with: a reflection-type image display element that converts illumination light into image light by causing the illumination light to be reflected on an image display surface, and outputs the image light; a prism unit that bends the path of the illumination light and allows the image light to pass therethrough; and a projection optical system that projects the image light having been transmitted through the prism unit on to a screen. The image display surface comprises a plurality of micromirrors, wherein an image is formed by modulating the intensity of the illumination light as a result of ON/OFF control performed on the tilt of the surface of each of the micromirrors at the image display surface. The prism unit has an air gap that is inclined at a prescribed angle with respect to a principal ray of the image light emitted from the center of the image display surface, and the image light transmits through the air gap. The projection optical system has an aperture provided with a noncircular opening having a partially notched shape formed as a result of having an arched light-shielding section at the periphery of a circular opening, wherein the image light corresponding to an end of an F-number light flux that has a greater incidence angle with respect to the air gap is shielded by the light shielding section that satisfies a prescribed condition.
