Provided is a projection type image display device, comprising a projection optical system which sufficiently satisfies the requirements of significant reduction of shooting distance and large imaging and which achieves miniaturization of the entire device as well as easy manufacturing. The present invention pertains to an inclination-type projection type image display device comprising, inside a housing: a light source; an image display element that modulates the intensity of a light from the light source in accordance with an image signal; and a projection lens system that includes a plurality of lenses that project the modulated image light from the image display element from an oblique direction with respect to a projection surface, wherein the projection lens system comprises a lens that has a lens surface of an aspheric surface integrated with a lens surface of a free curved surface, the lens having the lens surface of the aspheric surface integrated with the lens surface of the free curved surface being placed in a position in which light flux separates from each other in the projection lens system.
