Abstract:
This projection type image display device comprises: a light source unit that generates and emits white light onto a first optical axis; an illumination unit that is provided on a second optical axis, splits the white light into predetermined colored light, and uniformize the illuminance distribution of the colored light; an image generation unit that includes a display element for modulating the colored light uniformized by the illumination unit in response to an image signal, and a projection lens for emitting and projecting, onto a third optical axis, image light including the modulated colored light; at least one optical path switching means for selectively switching between reflection and transmission of the white light; a light diffusion unit that includes a diffusion optical system for spreading the white light over a desired illumination range and projecting the spread white light as illumination light; and a control unit that controls the optical path switching means to switch the emission of light between the image light and the illumination light.
