A projection type recommendation method, a server and a client for solving an issue of the prior art, in which a client is unable to select an optimum projection type for playback of a 360∘video, resulting in poor user experience. The method comprises: a client sending to a server a first request message comprising an identifier of an MPD file of a 360∘video; the server acquiring the MPD file according to the identifier of the MPD file, wherein the MPD file comprises information of media segments corresponding to at least two projection types; the server returning to the client a first response message, comprising information of the media segments corresponding to the at least two projection types and information of a recommended projection type, wherein information of the recommended projection type indicates a projection type from the at least two projection types to recommend to the client and comprises priority indication information of one projection type from at least two projection types or multiple projection types from the at least two projection types.
