Provided are a projector and method for preventing image degradation in the same wherein the temperature distribution in a direction orthogonal to the optical axis of a projection lens is made uniform, thereby preventing a lowering of quality of projected images. Unnecessary light within a projection lens 15 is shielded by a light shielding member 38. The light shielding member 38 is affixed to a second lens frame 44 in a second part P2 which is on the opposite side of the optical axis CL from a first part P1 which is on a side to which an image forming panel 14 is shifted with respect to the optical axis CL within a lens barrel. Because the light shielding member 38 is affixed to the second lens frame 44 in the second part P2, heat from the unnecessary light is dispersed to the second part P2 from the first part P1 within the shielding member 38. Thus, local temperature increases are suppressed, thereby suppressing deformation of the lens barrel 41. Therefore, lenses L1 - L5 do not tilt due to the deformation of the lenses, and reductions in resolution of the entire image caused by tilting of the lenses and occurrences of focal offsetting in the diagonal direction because of occurrences of field curvature are suppressed.
