Abstract:
A projector equipped with a first emission-side polarizing plate (43R), a second emission-side polarizing plate (43G), a third emission-side polarizing plate (43B), and a cross-dichroic prism (45). The first emission-side polarizing plate is positioned on the emission side of a first liquid crystal light valve for modulating light in a first wavelength band. The second emission-side polarizing plate is positioned on the emission side of a second liquid crystal light valve for modulating light in a second wavelength band. The third emission-side polarizing plate is positioned on the emission side of a third liquid crystal light valve for modulating light in a third wavelength band. The cross-dichroic prism has a first lateral surface (45a) which faces the first emission-side polarizing plate and on which light in the first wavelength band is incident, a second lateral surface (45b) which faces the second emission-side polarizing plate and on which light in the second wavelength band is incident, a third lateral surface (45c) which faces the third emission-side polarizing plate and on which light in the third wavelength band is incident, and a fourth lateral surface (45d) for emitting synthesized light synthesized from the light in the first, second and third wavelength bands. One or more of the first, second and third emission-side polarizing plates are positioned at an angle relative to the facing lateral surfaces.
