Provided is a projector that suitably generates a white beam from a laser beam source and uses the white beam to display an image. A white beam generation unit of the projector has: a rectangular beam generation lens that generates, from a blue beam of blue laser, an excitation beam having a rectangular shape; and a fluorescent substance wheel which is irradiated with the excitation beam and on which a fluorescent substance that emits a yellow beam is applied. In the fluorescent substance wheel, an x-axis, a y-axis, and an angle θ in the counterclockwise direction from the x-axis are respectively defined as the horizontal direction, the vertical direction, and a positive value, and v represents the vertical length, and h represents the horizontal length of the rectangular-shaped region irradiated with the excitation beam. Among regions on which the fluorescent substances are applied, the center of the rectangular shape is disposed to be present: in a region having any angular range between 45° and 135° or between 225° and 315° under the condition hv; or in a region having any angular range between 22.5° and 67.5°, between 112.5° and 157.5°, between 202.5° and 247.5°, or between 292.5° and 337.5° under the condition h=v.
