Title:
PULSED MAGNETIC OPENING OF ELECTRON RESONANCE ION SOURCES FOR THE GENERATION OF SHORT, HIGH-CURRENT PULSES OF HIGHLY CHARGED IONS OR ELECTRONS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2001006533
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
For the extraction of substantial, continuous flows of ions from electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources with an ECR heated plasma that is completely confined in a magnetic configuration, the sources have to be asymmetrical to such an extent that the axial magnetic confinement is poorer on the extraction side than on the opposite side, so that ion losses in the direction of extraction result in larger extracted ion flows. If the magnetic confinement field is suddenly reduced in the zone of extraction of an ECR ion source that is operated with a symmetrical, axial magnetic confinement, that is, if the magnetic confinement is suddenly and completely opened in the zone of extraction, the entire plasma is suddenly displaced towards the extraction aperture so that the ion flows extracted there are suddenly increased. The high ion flow pulse continues until the plasma reservoir is exhausted or until the magnetic confinement is switched on again. The pulse repetition rate is determined by the build-up time of the plasma after the magnetic confinement has been switched on again. It is also possible to extract electron flow pulses instead of ion flow pulses.
