Abstract:
A rack and pinion steering gear unit is configured so that an insertion section (16) formed at the front end of a pinion shaft (6) is rotatably supported, through a slide bearing (20), on the inner-diameter side of a support recess (17a) in a second receiving section (12a) constituting a casing (10a). A ventilation groove (32) for connecting, while the insertion section (16) of the pinion shaft (6) is disposed on the inner-diameter side of the slide bearing (20), an inner space (33), which is defined by the inner surfaces of the support recess (17a) and the slide bearing (20) and by the front end surface of the pinion shaft (6), and an outer space (34), which is present around a portion of the outer peripheral surface of the pinion shaft (6), the portion being not located on the inner-diameter side of the support recess (17a), is formed in the inner peripheral surface of the support recess (17a) in the second receiving section (12a) constituting the casing (10a).
