Abstract:
Disclosed are a rack and pinion type steering device capable of reducing contact surface pressures, suppressing the wear of contact surfaces, and preventing a rack guide movable amount from being excessively increased by increasing the contact area of the outer peripheral surface of a roller on the outer peripheral surface of a rack shaft in a rack guide; and a method of manufacturing the steering gear. The cross sectional shape of the outer peripheral surface of the roller (24) is formed in an outer peripheral surface having a cross sectional shape formed of two circular arcs and the outer peripheral surface is surface hardened. A pinion shaft, the rack shaft, and a rack guide holder are assembled in a housing, and an adjust screw is strongly tightened to press the rack guide holder toward the rack shaft under an overload. In this pressed state, a torque is applied to the pinion shaft to reciprocate the rack shaft (15) in the axial direction to plastically deform the outer peripheral surface of the roller (24) in the shape of the outer peripheral surface of the rack shaft. The outer peripheral surface of the roller (24) is brought into line contact with the outer peripheral surface of the rack shaft (15) at portions (C) and (D) to increase the contact area.
