Abstract:

A raw material for desiccants which can be inhibited from undergoing an abrupt reaction with water and generating intense heat and has high hygroscopicity; and a process for producing the material. The process for producing a raw material for desiccants is characterized by comprising a mixture production step in which a mixture comprising 80-93 mass% calcium carbonate and 7-20 mass% at least one member selected from the group consisting of alkali metal salts, alkali metal hydroxides, alkali metal sulfides, alkali metal nitrides, and copper oxides is produced and a burning step in which the mixture is burned at 1,050°C or higher. The raw material for desiccants is one obtained by the process. In this raw material for desiccants, the area in which water comes into direct contact with the material has a proper size, whereby the raw material for desiccants is inhibited from undergoing an abrupt hydration reaction with water. A balance between the heat generation by the hydration reaction of the material and the heat dissipation by air cooling is hence maintained.
