THE STATE OF ART

Wastes of the plastic bags, which are used while shopping and for putting garbage, stay for minimum of 800 years in land; while 400 years in the sea. Over time, these wastes pollute the nature undergoing chemical changes. They poison the living creatures indirectly. Plastic bags undergo chemical dissolutions in the light. In time, they breakdown into smaller and more toxic petro-polymers; and intoxicate soil and water. Microscopic toxic particles, which are caused by plastic bag waste, enter the food chain; and affect the natural life adversely. Plastic bags cause an increase of diseases in living creatures. Users are not sufficiently aware of and sensitive to the harm done by use of plastic bags. Furthermore, in many places, plastic bags are offered free of charge, which increases their usage.

Some of the damages of the nylon bags to the environment are given below;

• Nylon bags are made from polyethylene which is a petroleum derivative. · They are widely consumed as they are free: and the waste is thrown into nature together with the garbage. . .

• It takes a thousand years for a single plastic bag, which we use for an average of 15 minutes, to perish in the nature fully.

• Only 1% of nylon bags is recycled; 99% remains in the nature.

· When nylon bags start to deteriorate in the nature, they release chemicals to the environment, which are harmful to the environment; and these substances go into the soil and water; and gradually contaminate our food chain. • They pollute seas, lakes and rivers; clog sewerage. Because of the nylon bags that are thrown out to the nature, sea animals such as dolphins, seals, whales, sea turtles eat them, mistaking them for food. This leads to deterioration in their digestive systems, causing their death.

· Because they are transparent, nylon bags cause greenhouse effect and give rise to forest fires by absorbing heat.

• %90 of the total waste is made up of nylon and plastic waste.

In addition, bags made out of paper are used extensively today as well. As it is well known, trees are cut down to make paper. When paper goes into waste, it does not dissolve as easily as one might think. Paper bag is not dissolved for a very long time since oxygen, light, water, which cause degradation, do not reach the bottom layer. As a result paper bags also cause damage to the environment and the nature.

For the reasons above, the environmentalists are turning to knitted, woven or non- woven bags. However, use of cloth bags is not common enough.

Today, it is known that there are many applications with bags which are made from textile materials. One of these applications is EP2082663; a shopping bag which is made of cloth without weaving (non-woven). Another application is JP2009220846; a shopping bag which is made of polypropylene cloth without weaving (non-woven). Another application relates to a shopping bag that is made of cloth disclosed in the application numbered GB2453376.
