Abstract:
A reactor for chlorine production which is a multitubular heat exchanger type reactor for use in producing chlorine by oxidizing hydrogen chloride with oxygen, characterized in that the inside of the shell of the reactor is divided in the tube-axis direction by partitions into two or more regions, a heat medium circulates in each region, the reactor has a means of controlling the temperature of at least one of the heat media, the temperature control means comprises a cooler and/or a heater, the reaction tubes of the reactor are packed with catalysts which differ in catalytic activity and are disposed in layers from the inlets toward the outlets, the catalysts are ruthenium oxide catalysts, 40% or less of the whole ruthenium has been packed in that region of the reaction tubes which ranges from the inlet to less than 50% of the reaction tube length, and 60% or more of the whole ruthenium has been packed in the region ranging from 50% to 100% of the tube length. Also provided is a process for chlorine production characterized by using the reactor for chlorine production, feeding a gas comprising hydrogen chloride and a gas comprising oxygen to the reactor, and oxidizing the hydrogen chloride with the oxygen at a pressure of 0.1-1 MPaG and a temperature of 200-500°C.
