This recording playback device (1) is provided with: a recording processor (100) for extracting subtitle data from stored multimedia data, sectioning a subtitle character string in the extracted subtitle data into phrases, determining, for each of the sectioned phrases, a characteristic degree which indicates by a higher value a phrase corresponding to a more characteristic concept, and storing meta-data including the characteristic degree together with the multimedia data; and a playback processor (130) for analyzing the read meta-data and performing summary playback, with at the playback time being the time of displaying a subtitle character string that contains a phrase for which the value indicated by the characteristic degree is higher than a predetermined value.
