[PROBLEMS] To provide a resistance variable element which can perform bipolar operation in prescribed operating principles and can be used as a storage element. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A resistance variable element is provided with a laminated structure including an electrode (1), an electrode (2), an oxide layer (3) positioned between these electrodes, and an oxide layer (4), which is in contact with the oxide layer (3) and positioned between the oxide layer (3) and the electrode (2). The status of the oxide layer (3) can be varied from a low resistance status to a high resistance status by applying oxygen ions (5) to the oxide layer (4), and can be also varied from the high resistance status to the low resistance status by receiving oxygen ions from the oxide layer (4). The status of the oxide layer (4) can be varied from a low resistance status to a high resistance status by receiving oxygen ions from the oxide layer (3), and can be also varied from the high resistance status to the low resistance status by applying oxygen ions to the oxide layer (3).
