Abstract:
A conventional waveguide laser device has a problem of not being able to obtain linear polarization when using an isotropic laser medium in a core. A ridge-waveguide laser device according to the present invention includes: a substrate; a core bonded to the substrate, including a laser medium, and having a higher refractive index than the substrate; and a cladding bonded to the core, constituting a ridge waveguide with the core, comprising a birefringent material having an ordinary refractive index and an extraordinary refractive index lower than the refractive index of the core, the ordinary refractive index and the extraordinary refractive index being different from each other.
