Provided is a road surface area detection device capable of detecting a road surface area using a simple structure. This road surface area detection device (10) is provided with: a normalized velocity calculation unit (25) which determines a normalized velocity (nv) on the basis of a movement of a feature point (P) in an image acquired by means of a camera (13) mounted on a running vehicle (1); a decision range calculation unit (28) which, in a center area portion (cp) having the vehicle (1) at the center in a width direction (Dw) orthogonal to a running direction (Dm) of the vehicle (1), determines a road surface decision range E indicated by the magnitude of the normalized velocity (nv) on the basis of normalized velocities (nv) of at least two feature points (P) having different positions in the width direction (Dw); and a road surface area identifying unit (29) which identifies, as a road surface area (Ar) on which the vehicle (1) runs, an area in which the feature points (P) having the normalized velocities (nv) are positioned in the width direction (Dw) in the road surface decision range (E).
