An objective of the present invention is to provide a single-phase AC rotary electric machine that eliminates return coil (return line) and can have slots having a large space in which a coil can be disposed. The single-phase AC rotary electric machine 1 according to the present invention comprises a rotor 2 and a stator 3 disposed with a radial gap G between the rotor 2 and the stator 3. The rotor 2 includes a plurality of magnets 14 constituting rotor magnetic poles N and S disposed in the circumferential direction. The stator 3 includes a stator iron core 12, a plurality of teeth 11 disposed on the stator iron core 12, and coils 13 wound on the teeth 11. The teeth 11 each include a plurality of branches 11b and 11c which are branched into a plurality in the circumferential direction on the tip end side facing the rotor magnetic poles N and S. At the tip ends of the branched portions 11b and 11c branched into a plurality, the two tip end parts 11bc and 11cc that are adjacent in the circumferential direction are separated from each other by one pole of the rotor magnetic poles N and S.
