Abstract:
An elevator has a car movable vertically in a hoistway, a main rope for suspending
the car, and a hoist including a drive sheave over which the main rope is passed
and vertically moving the car by rotation of the drive sheave. A safety device
for the elevator has a hoist brake device for braking rotation of the drive sheave
to apply braking force to the main rope, an auxiliary brake rope as a separate body
from the main rope, an auxiliary brake pulley provided at the upper part of the
hoistway and over which the auxiliary brake rope is passed, and an auxiliary brake
device for applying braking force to the auxiliary brake rope. The car receives
braking force from the main and auxiliary brake ropes by operation of the hoist
brake device and the auxiliary brake device, respectively, and is braked by the
braking force that the car receives.
