The invention is used for protecting a transformer against short-circuiting and overloads. It simplifies an apparatus and operation, increases the information content of a display and reduces the overall dimensions. It comprises a housing closed on one side by a contact cap and on the other side by a plate with a conductive element. An electromagnetic tripping mechanism with a magnetic core, a coil, a spring-loaded armature and a guide is arranged on the inside. When the spring is extended, the armature takes up a position offset from the axial line of the housing, and moves perpendicularly to said axis. A unit for controlling the tripping mechanism comprises fuses and a varistor. A trip-free mechanism comprising a guide element with a bushing which is disconnected and damped by springs is arranged opposite the tripping mechanism. A thread is extended on the inside, one end of which is connected to the damping spring and the other end of which is fixed on the outside of the cap. An actuating indicator is mounted in the cap. A propelling tube moving upon hooking in the armature with the bushing pushes out the indicator.
