Title:
SCINTILLATING SUBSTANCE AND SCINTILLATING WAVE-GUIDE ELEMENT
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1999/035512
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The present invention pertains to the fields of nuclear physics, medicine and petroleum industry, and may essentially be used for measuring X-ray, gamma and alpha radiation. This invention can also be used for monitoring the concentration of transuranic radionuclides in human habitat, for the non-destructive structural analysis of solid bodies, for performing a three-dimensional positron-electron computerised tomography, etc. This invention essentially relates to the introduction of additional ingredients into the chemical composition of a scintillating substance based on oxyorthosilicate crystals which include cerium (Ce) as well as Lu¿2?SiO¿5? capable of crystallisation in the structural type. The results of this invention are: an increase in the luminescence light efficiency; a reduction of the luminescence period of Ce?3+¿ ions; an increase in the reproducibility of grown crystal properties; a lower cost of the starting mixture used for growing scintillator crystals and containing Lu¿2?O¿3? in large quantities; a higher introduction efficiency of the luminescent radiation from a scintillating crystal into a fiberoptic wave-guide; the prevention of crystal decrepitation during the element manufacturing process; the creation of wave-guide properties in scintillating elements; and the elimination of the expensive mechanical polishing of the side surface thereof.
