Title:
SEA WAVES ENERGY CONVERTER
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1997/037122
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The invention relates to an ocean roll power station with bell-like shaped hollow bodies (2) upside down just above the bottom of the ocean. The vertical movements of the water mass in the oceans, especially when bounded on steep rising shores, become captured over a relatively large diameter. The rising water mass pressurizes the trapped air (3) above the inside water level and when falling causes expansion, in this way keeping the air continuously in motion. A rectifying circuit (21) provides for one-way flow through a pneumatic motor, directly coupled to an electric generator.

Description:
SEA WAVES ENERGY CONVERTER

Utilizing the potential energy stored in oceanic rolls by conversion into electric power by means of vertical moving vessels, whether or not completely submerged, can be taken for granted. However: the disadventage of such systems being in the way to put into practice can be described as complexity of conversion from kinetic energy into electric power, combined with relative low efficiency.

With the oceanic roll power plant according to the invention, said difficulties becomes obviated, using the roll directly for respectively pressurizing and expanding the trapped air above the liquid level inside the upside-down anchered bells .

The completely submerged bells do have different elevations with regard to the bottom of the ocean, so pressure fluctuations becomes reduced to a minimum and in case of sufficient number equally interpolated even nearly eliminated. Mutual communicating of the bells will be facilitated via a common circuit equiped with a valve system intended to allow just an one-way air flow through a pneumatic motor, directly coupled to an electric generator, in this way conversing the roll energy into electric power which can be transported to the shore by means of loss-free cables.

Although installations as described above are specificly adapted for use in coastal waters bounded on oceans and in the vicinity of thinly inhabited areas, a cluster of such ins allations can be applicable for larger

agglomerations as well.

The simplicity of the roll power plant according to the invention makes it possible to win durable energy from the eternal vertical movements of the oceans, especially for the benefit of coastal areas but also for inland agglomerations, in many cases being competiting with nuclear and fuel powerstations . Positive environmental aspects - no water, air nor horizon pollution! - makes the equipment extremely attractive.

Although several pneumatic motors are applicable for the generating system according to the invention, the so called "Roots Blower" - consisting of two in cross sectional view 8-shaped elements ( each element itself unrolling on the other) - in particular. By means of suchlike pumps the kinetic energy accumulated in the air can be easely conversed into electricity.

Rectifying of the air flow can be realized by a valve arrangement of which each valve allows free passage in just one direction while the automatic remote controle is such as to minimize the time for opening and closing. The bore shall be in accordance with the abovementioned provisions. Essentially the during lowerating in the ocean trapped air inside the vertical interpolated positioned bells is functioning as energy transportating medium. Furthermore no special mecanical means are required for the energy conversion apart from above mentioned items. Accumulating roll energy by means of respectively pressurizing and expanding the trapped air inside the bells and proceedingly supplying to a closed pneumatic system can be designated as essential also.

Rectifying the air flow before allowing it to enter the inlet nozzle of the pneumatic motor

belongs to the nature of the invention as well. The invention shall be explained on the basis of the drawing: The roll 1 induces an enlarged hydrostatic pressure inside the bell-like shaped hollow body 2, further referred to as "the bell", resulting in compression of the trapped air inside compression chamber 3 on top of the lifted water column A. The air in tubes 5, pressurized in this way, reaches(via the route as indicated by the arrows) the pneumatic motor 6 and the two 8-shaped bodies 7 becomes immediately rotating inside the house 8. The air leaves the house 8 and continues its way to space 9 wherein respectively the hydrostatic pressure and the air pressure became reduced because of the amplitude 11. Inside bell 10(which can be even much lower positioned!) - assumed this bell finds itself on that specific moment just below wave dale 11 - does have a decompression because of the lower night of the water column 12, related to water column . The air flow between compartments 3 and 9 became realized and remains maintained as long as the pressure difference exist. It will be clear that during the transmission roll 1 find itself above bell 10. From that moment the cycle as described above will be reversed, however without changing the direction of the air flow through the pneumatic motor 6, controlled by the one-way valve system 21 , eventually diafragma valves because of their very short opening and closing time.

The pressurized air flows via ports 13 and 14 through the pneumatic motor 6 in just one direction

The bells 2 and 10 are anchered to the bottom of the ocean 15 by means of piles 16 or otherwise, at least such as to withstand the force of the rolls 1 and 11, forcing the bells 2 and 10 to maintain the original position with regard to the ocean bottom 15.

The in tandem on the main shaft 17 mounted generator 18 delivers its energy to the distribution station 19 on shore 20, via conductor 22.
