A seal device for sealing between a work tank (2) having a sidewall opening (8) of large diameter formed in the sidewall, and a seal plate (4) arranged slidably while making an arm (1) penetrate and hermetically sealing the sidewall opening (8) comprises a groove-like portion (17) defined by the inner wall and the outer wall provided at the hole edge of the sidewall opening (8) of the work tank (2) over the entire circumference thereof and arranging the opening face to face the seal plate, and a pneumatic pressure source (15) for supplying pressurized fluid into the groove-like portion (17). Noncontact sealing is achieved between the groove-like portion (17) and the seal plate (4) by the pressure of pressurized fluid. Consequently, friction does not take place between the work tank (2) and the seal plate (4) resulting in a seal device where the amount of pressurized fluid used is reduced.
