The invention relates to a seal (11), in particular a rod seal for sealing an axially movable rod (9, 10) in a guide cylinder, in particular a piston seal for a pneumatically, electrically or hydraulically driven coating agent pump for pumping coating agent, said seal having an annular sealing element (13, 14) for bearing sealingly against a lateral surface of an axially movable rod, and at least one elastic, annular preloading element (15), the annular preloading element (15) radially surrounding the outside of the annular sealing element (13, 14) and preloading it radially inwards. The invention provides an annular main seal body (16), which surrounds the sealing element (13, 14) and the preloading element (15) on the outside and holds them. Furthermore, the invention also comprises a reversed variant in which the seal is situated in an annular groove in a lateral surface of a piston and bears sealingly against the cylinder running surface.
