Description:
Sealing device connected to a box for waste material from a fireplace

The present invention refers to a sealing device connected to a box intended to be used for keeping waste such as ashes and embers from a fireplace, for example an open fireplace or a wood-burning stove. The box encloses a cavity with walls. In one wall there is an opening for charging of the waste gathered in the fireplace by aid of a shovel, which in it ' s back portion comprises a cover or lid, which is tightly connectable against the outside of the wall via a seal, which is pressed together by a mountings to close the opening, when the front portion of the shovel is inserted in the opening and enclosed by the cavity after charging.

On the market today there are structures of this type, which use a shovel to gather waste in the form of ashes and embers from a fireplace, for example an open fireplace, a wood-burning stove, from burnt out material such as fire-wood, pellets, paper. The waste is thereafter placed in a gathering place such as for example a can, a case, which is open, why carbon monoxide, which is a toxic gas free from smell, is emitted into the surroundings indoors. Glowing burnable material can after gathering up spatter out and burn against or during continued supply of air, continue to burn in the collecting place for several days and lighten burnable material nearby, that then can continue spreading. Further, after the charging of the waste the shovel can be put aside with material still glowing on it, causing it to lighten burnable material nearby. Badly handling of ash from fireplaces causes today as much fires as forgotten burning candles. It also happens that the fireplace gets vacuumed, which in fact is very bad, since the glow easily can set burnable material in the vacuum cleaner on fire and furthermore adds more oxygen, which causes the glow to lighten even easier inside the vacuum cleaner. One object of the present invention is to eliminate the drawbacks existing in structures mentioned above in that one can gather the waste from burned-out material such as ashes and embers in a box having tight walls, which comprise an opening for charging the waste by aid of a shovel into the box. The back portion of the shovel comprises a cover or lid, which is tightly connectable against the outside of the wall around the opening via a sealing, which is pressed together by aid of a mountings, when the main part of the shovel is inserted through the opening into the cavity, so that the waste is tightly covered inside the cavity.

Thanks to the present invention, a sealing device connected to a box has now been achieved, which is a fire safe keeping place for waste of burned-out material from a fireplace. The box does not let out dangerous gases such as carbon dioxide and suffocates and close up remaining fire and glow. According to the invention the box comprises enclosing tight walls, which are mainly gas tight. Through an opening in the box the waste gathered in the fireplace are charged. The back portion of the shovel has a lid, which tightens against the outside of the wall around the opening, so that the same is closed, when the main part of the shovel is inserted through the opening into the cavity after charging. The box is made by metal sheet in the shape of a box formation, the flat walls of which are mainly parallel to each other constituting four sides, a bottom and an upper side, where the opening is arranged. The box is about 3 decimeter high respectively 2 x 1,5 decimeter wide, seen from above. The walls are made by bended metal sheet having sharp or rounded corners. The shovel has a bottom with side formations, which are made by bended metal sheet with an open front portion. The lid extends straight across the longitudinal direction of the shovel outside the side formations and bottom. The side formations and bottom are elongated and function as guiding portions towards an edge area at the opening, which, during the insertion, places the lid in an orientated position in a side direction up to a predetermined position. The lid has a handle, which can be reached from outside. When the lid is closed the box will be mainly gas tight, which makes that the oxygen in the box is finished almost immediately, when 1 gram of glowing carbon burns up about 17 liter of air. In a preferable embodiment example of the present invention the edge area around the opening on the outside of the wall comprises a resting area. Against this area a resilient sealing for example a packing is provided to tighten against the resting area but even against the extension area of the lid, which is turned towards the edge area. When the opening is tightened by the lid during closing the sealing is pressed together partly in a direction towards the rest area by aid of force applied against the outside of the lid. Thereafter the lid is locked in the predetermined position against it ' s outside by aid of a mountings or by aid of a threading. The sealing is made of a not burnable material, for example silicate or of a V-formed thin metal seen in a section across it's longitudinal direction and that the same is firmly provided at the extension area or at the resting area, which is glued by a fire resistant or mechanically fastened by for example a snapping function or by metal clips. In order to be able to apply the force and provide the press against the sealing the mountings comprises of an elongated body, for example a flat steel, which is pivotally anchored around an axis in an anchoring point. The axis extends in a direction across the extension area of the lid. The mountings extends in parallel with the upper portion of the upper side of the box and further a distance in over the outside of the lid, where the lid has a male portion similar to an extension, which extends out from the outside of the lid to fit into a female portion situated in the elongated body and which is turned towards the male portion. The elongated body can be pivoted in parallel to said upper portion around the axis until it borders the male portion. In this position the elongated body is lifted by manual power over the male portion for fitting into the female portion. The elongated body is spring back in this position, so that the female portion fits into the male portion. The force locks in this case the male portion in a fastened position in the female portion in the predetermined position. The elongated body has a lifting handle over the male portion for lifting the box. The handle for lifting the box is provided centrally in the upper portion over the center of gravity of the box, when the male portion is locked in the female portion, which gives a confirmation of that the lid is gas-tightly connected in a pressed condition against the sealing. If a locking has not occurred the handle takes a movable position, which gives a strong unbalance, when the box shall be moved away, which confirms that the box is not closed in a tightened way. The predetermined position is also confirmed by an arrow, which is provided at the elongated body near the axis, when the arrow meets a marking point on the upper side. The bottom portion has spacer means pointing downwards to a ground, such as for example a floor, to create a space having a flow of air under the bottom portion in order to decrease the heat transmission from the bottom portion to the ground in a position when the box has been heated by the waste from the fireplace.

The greatest advantages with the invention is that a very simple, cheap, aesthetically formed fire safe box has been provided, which encloses toxic gas, fire and glowing waste also from the shovel.

The invention is described closer below by aid of some preferable embodiment examples during reference to the drawings enclosed, in which

Fig. 1 illustrates a vertical section through a box standing on a ground,

Fig. 2 illustrates a view towards the box seen straight from

above towards it's upper side

As can be seen from fig. 1 and 2, a box 1 is illustrated and the box is intended to keep waste 2, such as ashes and embers from burned-out material in a fireplace. The box 1 encloses a cavity 3 having walls 4, a bottom portion 23 and an upper side 30 comprising an opening 5, through which waste 2 gathered in the fireplace are charged by aid of a shovel 6, which in it's back portion 8 has a cover or lid 7. The shovel 6 has a bottom 33 with side formations 24, an open front portion 25 and a back gable 26 at the lid 7. The outside 9 of one wall 4 has in it's upper side 30 an edge area 10 extending around the opening 5, on which a resting area 11 is provided, against which a resilient tightening sealing 13, for example a packing tightens. The same tightens also against an extension area 12 of the lid 7, turned against the edge area 10. The sealing 13 can be pressed together in a direction 14 towards the resting area 11 by a force applied against the outside 18 of the lid 7 by aid of a mountings 15, which consists of an elongated body 16, which is pivotally anchored around an axis 17 in an anchoring point 31. The upper side 30 has a male portion 19, to fit into a female portion 20 situated in the elongated body 16. The elongated body 16 can be turned up to a position where it borders the male portion 19. In that position it is lifted upwards by a manual power over the male portion 19 for fitting into the female portion 20 into a predetermined position 21, which occurs when the lid 7 is tightly connected, when an arrow 27, which is provided at the elongated body 16, is pointing towards a marking point 32 on the upside 30. The bottom portion 23 has distances or spacer means 29 pointing downwards towards a ground 28 to decrease the heat transmission from the bottom portion 23 to the ground 28. The elongated body 16 comprises a lifting handle 22 for lifting the box.
