A secondary battery is configured in such a manner that the thickness (TB0) of a core (30) at the center thereof in the widthwise direction is greater than the thickness (TA0) of the core (30) at both ends thereof in the widthwise direction. In winding operation, tensile forces (A, A') are applied in the longitudinal direction to the positive electrode (1), the negative electrode (2), and the separators (3a, 3b). The tensile forces (A, A') cause a binding force (B) to act on a broad surface (30W) of the core (30). The binding force (B) acts inward on the positive electrode (1), the negative electrode (2), and the separators (3a, 3b) toward the core (30). The positive electrode (1), the negative electrode (2), and the separators (3a, 3b) have an elastic force acting in the outer peripheral direction, and the binding force (B) tightly binds together the positive electrode (1), the negative electrode (2), and the separators (3a, 3b) against the elastic force. As a result of the configuration, no gap is formed between the positive electrode (1) and the negative electrode (2), so that the density of the flat wound electrode group (4) is increased to increase the capacity of the secondary battery.
