Abstract:
A self-adjusting locking plier (10) having a stationary assembly (11) providing a stationary handle (12) and a stationary jaw (13) and a moveable assembly (14) including an operating lever (15) and a moveable jaw (19) that is supported on the stationary jaw (13) with a slidable pivot connection (16) whereby the moveable jaw (19) is permitted to automatically close down on an object disposed between the jaws for providing self-adjustment for different sized objects to be gripped between the jaws (13, 19). The operating lever (15) is spring (29) biased to move away from the stationary handle (12). In addition, a dual link (30, 36) past-dead-center toggle locking mechanism is provided to lock the pliers (10) on to an objet gripped between the jaws (13, 19). The specific arrangement of the locking toggle mechanism (30, 36) in combination with the moveable operating lever (15) to which it is connected in further combination with the fact that the front end (24) of the lever mechanism (15) is connected with a slidable pivot (25) to the stationary jaw (13) provides a self-adjusting locking plier (10).
