Title:
SELF-SUPPORTED HYBRID CATALYSTS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POLYOLEFINS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2001/048036
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A solid self-supported cycloalkadienyl catalyst component is disclosed that includes: (i) a mixed metal alkoxide complex which is the reaction product of a magnesium alkoxide or aryloxide and at least one groupe IVB metal-containing alkoxide or aryloxide; and (ii) Cp, where Cp is a cyclic or polycyclic hydrocarbon having from 3-30 carbon atoms. A self-supported hybrid catalyst also is disclosed which contains the above components (i) and (ii), as well as (iii) a Ziegler-Natta catalyst species. A method of making the self-supported cycloalkadienyl catalyst and the self-supported hybrid catalyst and a method of polymerizing olefins using the catalysts also are disclosed. The catalysts are capable of producing polyolefins in high yield having a broad molecular weight distribution, or a bimodal distribution.

Claims:
What is claimed is:
1. 1) A solid selfsupported cycloalkadienyl catalyst component comprising: (i) a mixed metal alkoxide complex which is the reaction product of a magnesium alkoxide or aryloxide and at least one group IVB metalcontaining alkoxide or aryloxide; (ii) Cp, where Cp is a cycloalkadienyl hydrocarbon having from 330 carbon atoms; and (iii) a ZieglerNatta catalyst species.
2. The solid catalyst as claimed in claim 1, wherein the Group IV B metal is selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, and Hf.
3. The solid catalyst as claimed in claim 1, wherein Cp is a cyclopentadienyl compound.
4. The solid catalyst as claimed in claim 3, wherein Cp is one or more cyclopentadienyl compounds selected from the group consisting of cycolpentadiene, indene, butylcyclopentadiene, 1,2 bis (indenyl) ethane, and mixtures thereof.
5. The solid catalyst as claimed in claim 1, wherein the mixed metal alkoxide complex is prepared by the following reaction (3 a) Mg (OR) 2 + b M1 (OR') pXq + cM2 (OR") rXs + d (Clipper) where a < 1, b + c =1, d < 1; p + q =4 ; r + s = 4; M1, M2 are group IV B metals; R, R', R"are alkyl or aryl; X, Y are halide, alkoxide, alkyl, aryl; Clipper is a species which is able to assist in the breakup of the polymeric magnesium alkoxide or aryloxide.
6. A method of making a solid catalyst as claimed in claim 1 comprising : reacting (i) a mixed metal alkoxide complex which is the reaction product of a magnesium alkoxide or aryloxide and at least one group IVB metalcontaining alkoxide or aryloxide, (ii) a Cpcontaining complex, where Cp is a cycloalkadienyl hydrocarbon having from 330 carbon atoms, and (iii) a ZieglerNatta catalyst speciescontaining agent, in a suitable solvent to produce a mixture containing solid catalyst component; and removing the solid catalyst component from the mixture..
7. The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein the Group IV B metal is selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, and Hf.
8. The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein Cp is one or more cyclopentadienyl compounds selected from the group consisting of cycolpentadiene, indene, butylcyclopentadiene, 1, 2bis (indenyl) ethane, and mixtures thereof.
9. A method of polymerizing at least one olefin comprising contacting at least one olefin in the presence of the solid catalyst of claim 1, an aluminumcontaining compound and optionally, a selectivity control agent.
10. The method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the olefin is selected from the group consisting of ethylene, propylene, butylene, and mixtures thereof.
