Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to reduce RF loss in high-frequency wiring formed on an optical waveguide in a semiconductor Mach-Zehnder optical modulator, thereby enabling a high-speed modulating operation, without degrading the optical characteristics of branching/multiplexing optical circuits. Provided is a semiconductor Mach-Zehnder (MZ) optical modulator provided with: a Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide having two arm waveguides; a 1 × 2 multimode interference coupler that is formed of a semiconductor and that branches input light to the two arm waveguides; a 2 × 1 multimode interference coupler that is formed of a semiconductor and that multiplexes light from the two arm waveguides; and a phase modulation means for conferring a phase difference to light propagating through the two arm waveguides. The semiconductor Mach-Zehnder optical modulator is characterized in that: the 1 × 2 multimode interference coupler and the 2 × 1 multimode interference coupler are formed to have a deep-ridge structure; and a higher-order-mode light radiating means for radiating higher-order-mode light is connected to only the 2 × 1 multimode interference coupler among the two multimode interference couplers.
