A sensor element 20 comprising: an element main body 60; a detection unit; an upper connector electrode 71; a porous layer 80 having a porosity of at least 10% and covering at least the front end side of a first surface 60a having the upper connector electrode 71 arranged thereupon; and a first water incursion suppression section 91. The first water incursion suppression section 91: is arranged on the first surface 60a so as to split the porous layer 80 along the longitudinal direction of the element main body 60 or be positioned further on the rear end side than the porous layer 80; is positioned further on the front end side than the upper connector electrode 71; and has a length L in the longitudinal direction of at least 0.5 mm. The first water incursion suppression section 91 suppresses capillary action of water along the longitudinal direction and has at least a first dense layer 92, out of a first dense layer 92 which covers the first layer 60a and has a porosity of less than 10% and a first gap area 93 adjacent to the first dense layer 92 and not having the porous layer 80 present therein.
