Abstract:

A separator for alkaline batteries is characterized by having a nonwoven fiber structure including polyamide fibers and solvent-spinning cellulose fibers as main fibers wherein the mass ratio of the polyamide fibers to the solvent spinning cellulose fibers is within the range from 20:80 to 80:20. The polyamide fiber is made of a polyamide wherein 60-100 mol% of the dicarboxylic acid unit is the terephthalic acid unit and 40-99 mol% of the diamine unit is 1,9-nonanediamine unit. The separator is excellent in the liquid holding property, does not deteriorate even when used in an alkaline battery wherein a positive electrode mixture including an agent for improving the discharge performance under heavy loads which has a strong oxidizing power is used, and can have good performance even after a long exposure to high temperatures. Therefore, the separator is suitably used in devices which requires discharge performance under heavy loads.
