Abstract:
A light sensor is provided such that two light receiving elements (50b) are disposed upwardly on the upper surface of a retaining holder covering the upper portion of a cloth pressing leg so as to surround a sewing-needle-vertically- reciprocating area, and two light projecting elements (50a) are downwardly disposed oppositely to and above them. The light projecting elements (50a) are tuned on and off at a drive frequency of at least several hundred hertz that is higher than a commercial ac power supply frequency to emit an inspection light. Only when the light receiving elements (50b) do not receive the light of the specified drive frequency, a control device (12) operates a needle oscillating/releasing pulse motor (24) to move a needle releasing mechanism, thereby cutting off power transmission to the needle and releasing it. Accordingly, an erroneous operation by the flickering of a fluorescent light can be prevented to permit positive detection of foreign matters and stopping of a needle motion.
