Title:
SHAFT SEALS AND BURNER LOOPS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2012/042272
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
A thermal machine is configured as a Stirling engine and has an output shaft (11) rotatably mounted in a casing (13) together with a seal arrangement (10) for the shaft including two lip seals (16,17) confronting each other and mounted in a housing (23) in the casing, to surround the shaft. The machine has a source (24,25) of lubricating oil which is supplied to the housing between the two lip seals, at a greater pressure than that prevailing within the casing. The machine has a heat exchanger (35) to supply heat to a hot piston-and-cylinder combination, that heat exchanger being supplied with hot gases from a combustion chamber (34) in which a hydrocarbon fuel is burnt. A compressor (30) drives combustion air into the chamber (34), the compressor (30) being driven by a turbine (31) receiving the hot gases following their passage through the heat exchanger (35).
