Abstract:

A wrap spring clutch (22) having a spring (28) constructed of a shape memory alloy operates in the same manner as any other basic wrap spring clutch except that the spring (28) expands and releases when the spring (28) is heated to a predetermined temperature. The heat may be applied to the spring (28) through external sources or by an electrical current (32) being applied to the spring (28).
