A sheave positioning device reliably releases closing control of a belt type stepless transmission. In the sheave positioning device, a pulley (2) around which a belt (7) is wrapped is constructed from a fixed sheave (5) and a movable sheave (6) placed so as to face the fixed sheave (5), a valve element (41) is provided in a flow path (38) for discharging pressurized fluid to fluid pressure chambers (16A, 16B) for pressing the movable sheave (6) toward the fixed sheave (5), and the valve element (41) closes the flow path (38) when pressed in the direction against the pressure in the fluid pressure chambers (16A, 16B). The sheave positioning device also has a valve closing mechanism (43) for generating advancing force for pressing the valve element (41) in the direction against the pressure in the fluid pressure chambers (16A, 16B). The valve closing mechanism (43) is adapted so that, with a predetermined transmission ratio set, the advancing force is greater than a load pressing the valve element (41) in the valve opening direction and so that the advancing force is smaller than a load pressing the valve element (41) in the valve opening direction when the pressure in the fluid pressure chambers (16A, 16B) is maximum.
