Abstract:
A sheet feeder is provided with a sheet holding means for holding a stack of sheets, a sheet drawing means for drawing in sheets from one side of the stack of sheets on the sheet holding means, and a sheet separating and feeding means for separately feeding the sheets one by one to a conveyance path, said sheet separating and feeding means being provided downstream of the sheet drawing means in the sheet drawing direction. The sheets to be supplied from the sheet holding means by the sheet drawing means are separately fed from the sheet holding means toward the conveyance path on the downstream side in the sheet feeding direction while passing across an inclined surface that is inclined in the direction in which the sheets are supplied. Between the sheet drawing means and the sheet separating and feeding means, there is provided an orientation holding means for acting on the sheet so as to hold the feed orientation of the sheet as the sheet is being separately fed. In the vicinity of the point where the sheet holding means and the inclined surface meet, the orientation holding means is provided so as to be displaceable between a position at which the orientation holding means projects from the inclined surface and a position at which the orientation holding means is retracted, and the amount of projection by the orientation holding means from the inclined surface increases substantially as the number of sheets in the stack decreases. When the orientation holding means is in the projected position, the orientation holding means has the function of pushing up the sheets supplied from the sheet holding means by the sheet drawing means and holding the feed orientation of the sheets.
