Abstract:
Provided is a shock absorber, and a manufacturing method thereof, in which trivalent chromium is used and in which both a high degree of hardness and low friction are achieved at a high level without utilizing hexavalent chromium that can harm the human body and the environment. The shock absorber (100) of the present invention is characterized by being provided with a cylinder (1) in which hydraulic oil (3) is encapsulated, a piston rod (2) which is capable of moving inside the cylinder (1), and an oil seal (8) which is secured to the cylinder (1) and slides with the piston rod (2), and by having, on the surface of the piston rod (2), a hard layer composed mainly of chromium obtained from a trivalent chromium plating bath, wherein the hard layer includes both crystalline and amorphous structures and includes an additive other than chromium.
