Abstract:
A shock absorbing device of an automobile, comprising a knee protector (26) disposed at the front of the knees (23a) of an occupant (23) and covering a steering column (15) from the rear lower side and a stay (30) for supporting the knee protector (26) on the steering column (15). When the forwardly moving knees (23a) are collided with the knee protector (26), the stay (30) is deformed and the knee protector (26) moves toward the steering column (15). The device also comprises knee absorbers (38) disposed near the outer sides of the knee protector (26) and supported on a vehicle body front part (4) and stoppers (40) stopping the movement of the knee protector (26) toward the steering column (15) by a specified dimension or longer. The knee protector (26) stopped to move by the stoppers (40) guides the forwardly moving knees (23a) toward the knee absorbers (38).
