A side airbag device is configured so that vent holes are not closed during the expansion of the airbag. A side airbag device is provided with an airbag (1) and an inflator (5). The airbag (1) is formed by sewing the outer peripheries of base fabric panels (2a, 2b) together into a bag-like shape and has vent holes (4a, 4b) in one (2a) of the base fabric panels (2a, 2b). A cover member (6), which deflects the flow of gas discharged from the vent holes (4a, 4b) during expansion, is joined to the portion where the vent holes are formed. The cover member (6) consists of fabric and has the largest width at an opening portion formed on the side from which gas is discharged. When sewing the cover member (6) to the one base fabric panel (2a), the portion where the opening (7) is formed is formed so that the cover member (6) is provided at a distance from the base fabric panel (2a) to form a gap therebetween.
