Abstract:
The present invention pertains to plasma techniques for purifying silicon which are used in the industrial production of silicon for the photo-electronic industry, mainly for manufacturing solar panels. The purification method involves heating the raw silicon at a temperature of 1500 to 1800° C using a plasma torch until a melt is obtained and processing the melt with processing mixtures and/or gases. The silicon is heated by the plasma torch while rotating the crucible about its axis, which is capable of moving between a horizontal and a vertical position, until a melt is obtained in the shape of a cylinder with an ajustable wall thickness. During the rotation of the crucible, the processing mixtures and/or gases are supplied along the rotation axis, or at an acute angle relative to said axis, onto the inner surface of the cylinder formed by the melt in order to remove the impurities therefrom. The finished product is cast when the impurity concentration reaches a predetermined level. The device for realising this method includes a rotating crucible and a plasmatron as well as channels for supplying the processing mixtures and/or gases. The crucible is made in the form of a cylindrical vat that comprises two flanges on its end faces and is coated and veneered with quartz glass on the inside. The plasmatron is mounted on one side and without any gap in an opening of the flange that comprises the channels for supplying the processing mixtures and/or gases, while an opening for discharging the gas, removing the impurities and casting the silicon into an ingot mould is provided on the other side along the horizontal axis in the second flange.
