[Problem] The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a sizing agent for carbon fibers, which is capable of imparting excellent adhesiveness to carbon fibers that are used for the purpose of reinforcing a thermoplastic matrix resin; a carbon fiber strand which uses the sizing agent for carbon fibers; and a fiber-reinforced composite material. [Solution] The present invention is a sizing agent for carbon fibers, which is used for the purpose of reinforcing a thermoplastic matrix resin. The sizing agent for carbon fibers essentially contains a polymer component that has a glass transition temperature of 20°C or more and that does not have an endothermic peak having a melting endotherm based on crystal melting of 3 J/g or more as measured by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and the weight ratio of the polymer component in all the non-volatile components of the sizing agent is 10-100% by weight. The polymer component is composed of at least one resin that is selected from among aromatic polyester resins, aromatic polyester urethane resins and amine-modified aromatic epoxy resins.
