Abstract:
[Problem] To provide: a novel sliding member which exhibits chipping resistance and wear resistance, has excellent peel resistance, can achieve the reduction in friction, is particularly less likely to undergo chipping or cracking, and can also achieve uniformity and increased thickness with satisfactory productivity; and others. [Solution] The problem is solved by a sliding member 10 which comprises a substrate 11 and a coating film 1 on a sliding surface 16 of the substrate 11 and is configured such that the coating film 1 has a plurality of laminate parts 3 and carbon layers 4 respectively provided between the laminate parts 3, in which each of the laminate parts 3 has such a structure that repeating units 2 are laminated in the thickness direction Y, each of the repeating units 2 is composed of a black hard carbon layer B and a white hard carbon layer W which are shown in a relatively black or blackish color and a relatively white or whitish color, respectively, when a cross section of each of the laminate parts 3 is observed by bright-field TEM imaging, and each of the carbon layers 4 has a columnar texture 4c. It is preferred that the thickness of each of the laminate parts 3 is 2 to 9 μm and the thickness of the coating film 1 is 4 to 40 μm.
