A sliding part which is capable of improving the surface roughness of part to be worked by polishing a sliding surface of a metal portion of the part to be worked during the running-in and sliding movement of the sliding part, and therefore capable of reducing the coefficient of friction of the part to be worked and obtain good sliding characteristics thereof even if this part is not subjected to an ultra-precision finishing process, and which has a ceramic portion slidingly moved on the metal portion of the part to be worked, characterized in that the ceramic portion has a grain boundary phase and the sliding surface of the ceramic portion, which has not yet been subjected to running-in and a sliding movement has thereon a brittle layer formed by embrittling the grain boundary phase, which is exposed on the same sliding surface, by a chemical etching or ion impact process, the sliding part being preferably further provided with a complex film, in which solid lubricating particles are dispersed, on the brittle layer-carrying sliding surface thereof.
