Title:
SMART HYBRID DAMPER
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2002042659
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
The smart hybrid damper is an electrodynamic-shock-absorber type extendible and retractable strut. The smart hybrid damper is primarily composed of a disk type of mass for intertial force, a DC motor/generator (brush or brushless) with a resistive load variable circuit for variable damping, and a ball screw. The linear motion of actuator from shock forces or vibrations produces both an inertial force proportional to acceleration and a dissipative force proportional to velocity concurrently. If the resistive load being shunted to the armature lines is infinite, and the damper is extended and retracted, the DC motor/generator is rotated by the ball screw without providing significant resistance while the concurrently rotating disk alone produces a resisting force, and accordingly arrests the shocks and vibrations. If the resistive load is finite, then both the back electromotive force (back e.m.f.) induced by the rotating DC motor/generator shunted to the resistor and the inertial force by the rotating disk dissipate energy on both the extension and retraction of the damper. In this operation, the damper provides a combination of a dissipative force and an inertial force.
