A wire-grid polarizer is provided as an optical element on the plane of incidence of an imaging element. An array direction of the wire grid is such that desired polarization information is obtained, and an array pitch is such that light having a desired wavelength is transmitted from incident light. The array direction and the array pitch are set in pixel units. For a pixel block consisting of 2 x 2 pixels, for example, the array direction of each pixel comprises mutually different four directions of polarization. In a pixel block, the array pitch of each pixel is of an equal pitch. For example, a red unit UPr pixel block for acquiring the polarization information of a red component has an array pitch Λrθa that corresponds to the red component, a green unit UPg pixel block for acquiring the polarization information of a green component has an array pitch Λgθa that corresponds to the green component, and a blue unit UPb pixel block for acquiring the polarization information of a blue component has an array pitch Λbθa that corresponds to the blue component. The array pitch, etc., are adjusted in accordance with the angle of incidence of incident light. Polarization information becomes easily acquirable for each color component.
