Abstract:
Disclosed is an internal combustion engine which includes a variable compression ratio mechanism (A) being capable of changing mechanical compression ratios and a variable valve timing mechanism (B) being capable of controlling the timing of closing an intake valve (7). In the event of a failure of the variable compression ratio mechanism (A), the mechanical compression ratio and the timing of closing the intake valve are changed from the current operating point to a required operating point (dX) on a lower mechanical compression ratio side without intruding an exclusion region (X1, X2).
