Abstract:
A spark ignition type internal combustion engine includes a plurality of cylinders, in some of which combustion can be halted. The spark ignition type internal combustion engine further includes a variable compression ratio mechanism (A) capable of changing a mechanical compression ratio and a variable valve timing mechanism (B) capable of controlling the closing timing of an intake valve (7). When some of the cylinders are deactivated or when the number of deactivated cylinders is increased, the closing timing of the intake valve (7) is shifted in the direction approaching an intake bottom dead center, and the mechanical compression ratio of a cylinder in operation is reduced. By thus deactivating some of a plurality of cylinders, it is possible to obtain a high thermal efficiency even in a low engine load region.
