Abstract:

The present invention addresses the problem of providing a spark plug which has excellent withstand voltage characteristics at high temperatures and which has resistance to acidic atmospheres and basic atmospheres. This spark plug includes an insulating material which comprises 89 mass% or more Al component in terms of oxide amount and 0-0.2 mass%, excluding 0 mass%, Ti component in terms of oxide amount. The spark plug is characterized in that the insulating material is constituted of an alumina-based sintered object which contains, as grain boundary phases present among the alumina crystals, a first crystalline phase comprising at least one component selected from among a La component, Nd component, Pr component, Y component, Er component, Yb component, and Lu component and a second crystalline phase comprising at least one of components of Group 2 elements of the periodic table according to IUPAC Recommendations 1990, an Al component, and a Si component.
